FAQs

QUESTION ANSWER
What is BLC? BLC stands for Britannic Language Centre. We are an English school which has specialised in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) since 1985.
What progress can I make? We usually estimate that in a 1 week course your level of English will increase by an average of between 35% and 65% (Compared to your initial evaluation score). Naturally the intensive and one-to-one classes produce the best results. Personal motivation is also a vital factor, so we do everything to make you feel relaxed and confident.
How do you evaluate my level of English? When you arrive we make a comprehensive assessment of your language skills. After the first day's classes, our teachers meet to decide whether any adjustments are necessary.
How do you select your host families? The BLC host family supervisor personally visits all candidate families. The first inspection usually takes about an hour and a comprehensive assessment of the family is made. About 1 in 5 of the families visited, are retained to receive students. At the end of the stay we ask students to mark their family on every aspect of the stay. Only the families which receive the very highest marks are retained for future students. We have undertaken these quality checks for over 20 years.
Can I be moved from a host family? Yes. Naturally we do everything so that you are satisfied with your family & don't have to change. In practice, this is very rare as our objective, is to get it right first time.
Are the host families close to the BLC centre? The maximum distance is about 2Km. For most students it will be much less. The ease of access is always a consideration when we select a host family but other factors such as the warmth of the welcome and the quality of the accommodation, have a higher priority.
Why are your centres situated in North West London? There are several reasons for this:
• There is no regional accent which makes studying the language easier.
• The area has one of the highest socio-economic levels in England, ensuring a secure and attractive environment.
• Our centres are situated close to Underground stations, with quick &easy access to central London.
• Oxford, Cambridge, Windsor, Brighton, Bath, Stratford, Winchester... are all easily accessible, if you wish to visit these towns.

How we select your host family - A Guarantee of satisfaction

Each family is interviewed and their home fully inspected to ensure the quality of the accommodation.

The vast majority of our families have received guests for many years but even those who have joined us more recently are very aware of their role. Your local organizer stays in contact with the families throughout the year. This enables him to get to know them very well and to ensure that they maintain the high standards required. We also place great importance on the reports we receive from clients concerning their host families. At the end of each course, we ask guests to complete a questionnaire on every aspect of their stay in England. It is BLC policy that only the families who continue to receive the highest marks are retained. The care that we take in selecting our families and maintaining the quality of the welcome they offer is in itself a guarantee of satisfaction.

ABOUT OUR STUDY CENTRES

Our centres are situated in London's 'green belt at Harrow, Pinner, Northwood and Rickmansworth.

Each centre is close to a London underground station providing fast and easy access to the 'West End' and the sights, shops and monuments which have given London its worldwide reputation.

HARROW-ON-THE-HILL
is probably best known for its famous public school which has educated kings and prime ministers alike but it is also remarkable for its magnificent architecture.

PINNER
has developed from a 16th century village and many of the old world pubs and shops still thrive in a town centre surrounded by parks, woodlands and sports grounds.

RICKMANSWORTH
is equally picturesque and has the advantage of being close to a large and beautiful lake.

NORTHWOOD
is an elegant residential area bordered on three sides by very attractive golf clubs, including the internationally famous Moor Park.

TUITION: Seminars & one-to-one classes

BLC business study seminars are tailored to the specific needs of each individual.

We offer a choice of 4, 8 or 10 hours of tuition per day and the option of having a personal tutor, or working in groups of up to six students.

The cost of tuition is based on the number of teaching hours and the student/teacher ratio required.

Courses begin with a needs assessment and a detailed evaluation of the student’s existing language skills.

Our teaching methods are varied, modern and adapted to differing ability levels.

Courses target the specific language skills required for each student’s professional requirements.

Programmes normally run from Monday to Friday but alternative scheduling can be arranged if required.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

We’ll help you to develop language for your professional requirements, so that you fully understand what is being said to you and feel comfortable expressing yourself in any business situation.
